The University of Alabama offers 600+ registered student organizations, providing opportunities for involvement in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Each organization is categorized based on its purpose and goals as outlined in its constitution and by-laws. The Office of Student Involvement (SI) assigns one of the following categories to each student organization:

  • Student Organizations: Most organizations fall under this category. These are student-run groups formed by enrolled students with common interests or goals.
  • Coordinating Body/Sponsored Organization: Organizations that function as extensions of University departments or receive significant support from the University, including space, resources, and guidance from paid staff or faculty.
  • Sports Club: These organizations have a relationship with UREC and adhere to guidelines set by the UREC Intramural Office, in addition to the student organization rules.
  • Social/Fraternal Greek Organizations: Social sororities and fraternities must be registered with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and follow additional guidelines set by their governing councils.
  • Honor Society (Student Organization): Organizations that serve an academic purpose and invite students to membership based on specific criteria. These may be eligible for membership in the Coordinating Council for Honor Societies (CCHS).
  • New Student Organization: Organizations in provisional status that have not yet completed requirements for full recognition. If not completed within three months, they may be frozen or deemed defunct.
